Sue Bird named WNBA All-Star co-captain in her final season

In her final season in the WNBA, former UConn women’s basketball star Sue Bird has been named a co-captain for this summer’s WNBA All-Star Game on July 10 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago (1 pm on ABC).

Bird is joined by fellow former Husky great Breanna Stewart along with Sylvia Fowles (Minnesota Lynx) and A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces) as the four co-captains who will draft this year’s two All-Star teams on July 2 (3 pm on ESPN). All four were named All-Star starters Wednesday afternoon. Bird’s nod extended her league record to 13 All-Star selections.

“For icons like Sylvia and Sue to be voted into the AT&T WNBA All-Star Game as starters in their 15th and 19th seasons, respectively, is extraordinary,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in Wednesday’s release.

“And when you see the starting lineups dotted with first-time All-Stars like Sabrina Ionescu, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young, it just seems right that Sylvia and Sue – who have said this will be their final season – join A’ja and Breanna as co-captains for an All-Star event that will in some ways symbolize the passing of the torch to a new generation of WNBA stars.”

Stewart and Wilson earned their co-captain roles by leading fan-voting results and were paired with Bird and Fowles, who both retired following this season (Stewart with Fowles and Bird with Wilson).

The list of All-Star starters includes six frontcourt players and four guards. Veterans Jonquel Jones of the Connecticut Sun, Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker return to the All-Star stage, while Sabrina Ionescu, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young will each make their All-Star debuts. All-Star starters were selected by fans, current WNBA players and media.

Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner, who remains detained in Russia, was named an honorary All-Star and starter.

“During each season of Brittney’s career in which there has been an All-Star Game, she has been selected as an All-Star,” Engelbert said. “It is not difficult to imagine that if BG were here with us this season, she would once again be selected and would, no doubt, show off her incredible talents.
