A cat’s hilarious performance after pretending to be hurt has left viewers in stitches this week following a viral TikTok video.
Fifi and Kareem run the TikTok account dontstopmeowing. From Irvine in Scotland, they share videos of their cats’ unique personalities on the internet and have millions of followers who enjoy seeing their latest antics.
On Thursday, they shared the video of Chase the 2-year-old cat pretending to be hurt after his owner pretended he was hit against the wall. They captioned the video: “And the Oscar award goes to.”
In the hilarious video that now has more than 11 million views, Chase instantly curls up to his owner, hugging her and resting his head on her shoulder though he was really hurt.
In the video, the cat’s doting owner looks at the camera and says: “He’s such a liar.”
Fifi and Kareem told Newsweek: “Chase is known to be dramatic, so we expected nothing less from him.”
TikTok users were in stitches over the cat’s Oscar-winning performance and headed to the comments to share their thoughts.
One user said: “Talk about being dramatic. I love it,” while another commenter wrote: “He’s so overdramatic! But that’s so cute.”
“Omg he’s such a drama queen,” joked another TikToker.
In fact, cats pretending to be hurt isn’t unheard of. A study published by the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Associationn in 2011 looked at several cats displaying strange signs of illness when faced with stressful situations.
Using two groups of cats—one healthy and one with feline interstitial cystitis, a chronic illness characterized by recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder—the study found that both groups would demonstrate the same number of sickness behaviors in response to unusual events. This revealed that cats are capable of “pretending” to be sick in order to get the response they require from caregivers, much like how Chase in the video pretends to be hurt to gain some extra attention.
“We enjoy filming videos with our cats and showing the world their unique personalities. Our cats are very human-like and after sharing them, we have learned that they are very different than normal cats,” said Fifi and Kareem. “Aside from their unique personalities, we tend to share content that most people find relatable such as our cat daddy content, which is a series about the cats preferring dad over mom.”
“We nominate Chase for best performance,” joked another TikTok user after seeing the viral video. While one commenter said: “Omg the way he hugs. So cute.”
