Once called the “Great Swamp” in Farmington’s Berlin portion, the colony authorized the land as a new parish in 1754 and renamed it New Britain. By the early nineteenth century, the city had established itself as an emergent industrial hamlet. New Britain, sometimes known as the Hardware City, is home to Stanley Works, the American Hardware Corporation, and a number of other important industrial enterprises. With 12,000 employees by 1913, the American Hardware Corporation was Connecticut’s largest employer. New Britain is currently a working-class neighborhood notable for its substantial Polish population. Stanley Works bought Black & Decker in 2010, and the company is still based in the city.

New Britain has a poverty rate of 20.89% and a median household income of $60,930. Stanley Black & Decker, a Fortune 500 manufacturing corporation, has its headquarters in the city. This museum opened in 1903 and was the first in the United States dedicated entirely to American art. The museum’s unique collection has grown to more than 8,300 items over the years. The collection includes colonial and federal portraits by John Trumbull, John Smibert, John Singleton Copley, and Mather Brown, as well as 19th-century works by the Hudson River School, American Impressionists, and the Ash Can School.

Walnut Hill Park, which offers tourists and residents a wonderful green area where they may enjoy walking, running, or relaxing, is a terrific spot to spend a few hours appreciating the fresh air and athletic facilities. A carnivore resembling a Dilophosaurus left some 500 footprints visible in a geodesic dome, which is assumed to be on the sandy edge of a lake.

New Britain Youth Museum

The museum is made up of one big hall divided into several spaces for painting, crafting, and educational activities. Children may help in the kitchen, put on a marionette performance, solve puzzles, play in an ice cream parlor, and listen to a story.
